Everything Is a Mirror🪞
I increasingly believe that life is one giant hall of mirrors. As within, so without. Again and again, life holds up a mirror—not to punish us, but to help us understand ourselves more deeply. And it often begins with something very small.
"You're so annoying when you do that." Then, in a completely different situation... "Oops... now I do that too."
It's usually not a pleasant moment, but it is an incredibly valuable one. Because that is where compassion begins. First for yourself and then for someone else.
I've noticed that I keep making the same inner movement. The first step is looking honestly at myself. "Hmm... I don't actually like this behaviour in myself. What's underneath it?" Almost every time, I arrive at the same place. A sweet, frightened little girl who's afraid of losing something. Afraid of not being chosen. Not being seen. Afraid she'll never receive what she longs for most. That's the place where I now try to stay. Not judging myself, but understanding her. Even if no one else understands her. Even if no one else loves her. I still want to be there for her. Because I know where her behaviour comes from.
The second step is becoming curious. "Who else in my life has shown me this same behaviour?" And then something remarkable happens. My perspective begins to shift. Because if I know that I am fundamentally a good person who sometimes behaves awkwardly... Could it be that the other person is simply a good human being too? Perhaps there's a frightened child beneath their behaviour as well.
Recently, life mirrored one of my old patterns back to me. My first thought was: "Oh... so that's what it felt like." Suddenly, I understood why someone had once pulled away from me. I could finally feel how overwhelming my behaviour must have been. But then another question arose. "Why did I behave like that back then?" The answer wasn't: Because I was annoying. Because I was selfish. Because I was flawed. No. Because I was terrified. Because I felt desperately alone. I didn't need distance. Or rejection. Or silence. I needed someone. And then I wondered...
Perhaps the person standing in front of me needs exactly the same thing right now.
So instead of creating distance... I became curious. I asked a question. Many people skip that final step. And that's understandable. We often respond to others in exactly the same way we ourselves were once hurt. But by doing so, we remain trapped in the very same pattern. I believe the real invitation is to look beneath the behaviour.
Not only at what someone is doing...
but at the need that lives underneath it.
Sometimes I ask myself another question. Not only:"Why is this person behaving this way?" But also:"Why does this keep happening in my life?"
When the same pain, the same conflicts, or the same kinds of people keep appearing, I no longer believe it's merely coincidence. It's as though life keeps holding up the same mirror until I finally see what wants to be seen. Not to blame myself. But to come home, little by little, to the parts of myself that were once left behind in pain, fear or grief.
That doesn't mean everything is my fault or my responsibility. Some people genuinely do hurtful or boundary-crossing things, but I can still become curious about why this affects me so deeply. Why I keep finding myself in the same dynamics. As the saying goes: "If it's hysterical, it's historical."
Often, the intensity of our emotional reaction points to something much older than the situation itself. That is where I find the invitation. Not to look away. Not to change the other person, but to become curious about what this situation is awakening within me.
So far, that curiosity has never disappointed me. Whenever I stay curious instead of becoming defensive... Whenever I lean in instead of walking away... Something changes. More trust, more understanding, more safety.
Towards others...
but also towards myself.
Because of that, my world feels less and less like a hostile place and more like a place where people are simply allowed to make mistakes. More and more, it feels as though we're all here to learn something in this Earth School. Perhaps we all carry old pain in our own way. Perhaps we all begin life emotionally immature and slowly learn what love, responsibility and true connection really mean. To me, that feels like a journey from duality to unity.
From:
"You are wrong."
To:
"I understand why you do what you do."
That doesn't mean everything is okay, or that boundaries don't matter. Sometimes compassion sounds like this: "I understand why you did what you did... ánd I'm no longer willing to pretend it didn't affect me." Compassion and healthy boundaries are not opposites. If anything, they belong together.
But it does mean that I increasingly try to look beyond people's behaviour, towards the human being. Because I believe that, at our core, we all long for the same things: Safety. Love. Belonging. Dignity.
And yes... along the way, we sometimes do clumsy or painful things.
I do. You do. We all make mistakes.
But making mistakes doesn't make us bad people. It makes us human.
Some people might call this way of looking at life spiritual bypassing. Perhaps, at times, they're even right. I'm still learning when compassion is helpful, and when it's time to draw a clear boundary. I can only speak from my own experience. The deeper I dared to feel myself, the more compassion I developed for myself. And because of that... also for others.
That doesn't mean it's easy. Quite the opposite. Sometimes it hurts like hell. This ride on planet Earth is definitely not for the faint-hearted!
So let go of perfection. Towards yourself. Towards others. Be messy. Stay curious. And above all... keep your heart open. ❤️
